Rep. Jerrold Nadler, House Judiciary Democrats
Ask Secretary of State Blackwell to Explain
Ohio Election Problems
Hold Forum on Issues Raised in the Letter

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) and other House Judiciary Committee Democrats wrote to Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell requesting that he respond to reports of election irregularities in the state of Ohio. The fifteen page letter seeks answers to questions raised as part of the Democratic Committee Member's ongoing investigation into the 2004 election. A copy of the letter may be viewed at www.house.gov/nadler .

Moreover, House Judiciary Committee Democrats will hold the first Congressional forum on Ohio election irregularities on December 8, 2004, at 10:00 am in 2237 Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC. The forum, which is open to the public, will concentrate on many of the issues raised in the letter to Secretary Blackwell.

"As the Ranking Member on the Constitution Subcommittee, I have concerns about voter suppression and election irregularities," said Rep. Nadler. "Our democracy depends on free and fair elections. We cannot afford to question the legitimacy of our system, particularly in an era of close elections."

The House Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the Voting Rights Act, the Help America Vote Act, and constitutional rights to free and fair democratic elections.

"The letter to Secretary Blackwell and the upcoming forum will be very useful to the Committee as it considers legislation to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act in the upcoming Congress," said Rep. Nadler. We must ensure that everyone's vote is counted."
