MAINERS CALL FOR NATIONAL VOTING REFORMS. VOTING PROBLEMS IN OTHER STATES HIGHLIGHTED IN NEW REPORT, REFORMS NEEDED TO ENSURE FAIR ELECTIONS
Common Cause Maine and the Maine Citizen Leadership Fund are calling on
all activists and citizens concerned about voting in this country to
attend the casting of Maine's four electoral votes in Augusta on
Monday. At 2:00 pm., Maine's four electors will cast their ballots
for President. Common Cause will stand with the Maine Citizen
Leadership Fund and other coalition partners to demand electoral reform
and to hold Maine up as an example to the nation of how to hold an
accountable election.

Sponsored by The Maine Citizen Leadership Fund, Common Cause, Bruce Cole, and
the Maine AFL-CIO. Possibly one or more of Maine’s Electors will join
them.

Press conference will be held releasing report on problems with 2004 election
and call for national voting reforms.
"Maine’s four electoral votes are held meaningless if our sister states
can not hold elections which are fair, accurate and verifiable," said
Michael Sylvester, the Executive Director of Common Cause Maine. The report noted problems including but not limited to the following:

Lack of adequate voting machines that resulted in long waits, up to 9
hours, to vote.

People being purged from voting rolls in error.

Absentee ballots not being sent to voters who requested them.

Poll workers refusing to give provisional ballots to those eligible for
them.

Electronic voting machines malfunctioning.

Misinformation deliberately disbursed in minority communities with the
intent to suppress turnout.
